TEN things about Sardinia that you might not have known. DID YOU KNOW THAT:

1. The world famous ISP (Internet Service Provider) Tiscali, is a Sardinian Telecommunication Company created and based in Sardinia. Its name derives from the Sardinian mountain of Tiscali.

2. General Garibaldi (an Italian general and leader of the struggle to unify Italy) was a citizen of Sassari, a city near Alghero. Garibaldi is buried in the Sardinian island of Caprera, half of which he had bought in 1855, the remainder was gifted to him 10 years later by English friends.
The Garibaldi biscuit was named after the general. Garibaldi made a popular visit to South Shields in England in 1854, after which the biscuit was first manufactured by the Bermondsey biscuit company Peek Freans in 1861 following the recruitment of Jonathan Carr, one of the great biscuit makers of Carlisle.

3. Sardinia has its own flag, which like the English flag it also includes St George's Cross against a white background.

4. Su Gorroppu gorge, located in the Su Gologone area, is Europe's deepest canyon.

5. 600 million years old Sardinia is the oldest land in Italy and one of the oldest lands in the world.

6. The world's first vines have been traced back more than 3000 years to 1200 B.C. in Sardinia.

7. The Kingdom of Sardinia was the predecessor state of today's Italy. On 17 March 1861, law no. 4671 of the Sardinian Parliament proclaimed the Kingdom of Italy, so ratifying the annexations of all other Italian states to the Kingdom of Sardinia.

8. The English phrase "Sardonic grin" comes from the effect of a toxic local herb which causes convulsive laughter in its victims.

9. A growing number of scholars believe that Sardinia is actually the site of the lost City of Atlantis.

10. Sardinia's coastline (1,850km) makes up over a quarter of the entire Italian coast. Sardinia enjoys an average of 135 days of sunshine every year.
